센서 네트워크 상에서는 배터리 재충전이 어려운 대량의 센서 노드가 광범위한 영역에 걸쳐 배치되고, 하나의 채널을 공유하게 된다. 이와 같이 다수의 센서 노드들이 채널을 공유하는 상황에서 에너지 소모를 최소화할 수 있도록 Medium Access Control (MAC)을 디자인하는 것이 필요하다.

따라서 reliability하고 energy-efficient한 MAC 프로토콜이 제안되어 왔으며, 아래 있는 PDF 파일은 2006년까지 나와있는 센서 네트워크를 위한 MAC 프로토콜에 대한 survey이다.
